Lake Michigan was just off the back yard, and rockhounding destinations such as Lake Superior and South Dakota were within driving distance. Inheriting my father’s tools and passion, I learned how to cut, shape, sand and polish amethyst, agate, jade, malachite, jasper and more into unique shapes that bring out their natural beauty. Some become unique jewelry products such as wire wrapped pendants and sterling silver cuff links; others such as thunderegg halves and agate slabs make for beautiful home decor; and I have lots of finished stone you can incorporate into your next artistic project. Lapidary and jewelry products are what I produce, but they are byproducts of why I do the work. Every stone is an experiment, an opportunity to learn a little bit about geology or technique. Plus, I think about my dad every day that I'm in the workshop. I'm overjoyed with the product, humbled by how much I have yet to learn, and honored to be my father's son. During the tour, I will have exhibits showing every stage from harvest to finish using a variety of lapidary techniques. Visit my website anytime, or visit my studio during tour dates. I enjoy hearing that my pieces have a special spot in someone’s home, and are also used at their table. When I learned to throw pots, I instinctively began covering them with images and patterns. Drawing on three-dimensional forms has fascinated me for more than 30 years. My influences evolved after I moved “up north” to my “little blue house in the woods”. I’ve been here over 20 years now. The plants, animals and landscapes that surround me are an unending source of inspiration. I start with stoneware clay at the potter’s wheel or I hand build my pieces with clay slabs. Then I use a variety of illustration techniques including carving, stamping, and sgraffito to decorate my pieces. I strive to make my marks loose and spontaneous — as if they grew from the piece itself. I also play around with layering glazes on simple smooth surfaces. This creates dramatic effects that often remind me of landscapes. I’ve updated my studio name to Pigeon Road Pottery & Design. Pottery will continue to be a primary focus of the studio, but I have expanded my offerings to include printmaking, collage and assemblage fine art pieces inspired by my surroundings. In 2024 I returned to making 2-d art. It began while I recuperated from an accident that kept me away from clay. I continue developing this new work as part of my business and artistic journey. Observers will note the link to the imagery and themes I have long used in my ceramics. Mono prints are created by applying layers of acrylic paint on a Gelli plate and “pulling” prints on paper. Carving linoleum blocks is a natural extension of my sgraffito clay work. Once a block is carved it is inked and pressed on to paper. I also create collages and assemblage pieces from my mono prints, block prints, vintage papers, found objects and ceramic pieces I create in my studio. Pigeon Road Pottery & Design is a full-time art studio nestled in the woods 3 miles south of downtown Lake Tomahawk. NEW THIS YEAR: from Memorial Day through Labor Day my studio is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 5pm without an appointment. Visitors are also welcome year round with an appointment. Please call, text, or email ahead of time to avoid disappointment. My day-to-day studio time varies due to family responsibilities but I will do my best to accommodate you. While I was putting off finding a ‘real’ job, my mother requested a gourd birdhouse for her garden. Unable to find a birdhouse gourd locally, I went to the internet. Found a gourd grower and had to buy a box of ten. Then I had to figure out what to do with the other nine. The American Gourd Society (AGS) website with links to gourd artist sites across the country gave me a long list of possibilities and I was hooked. As I explored the many shapes, sizes and history of gourds, I learned that they were the first cultivars by indigenous peoples around the planet I started to research the individual uses. GOURDS have been cultivated for at least 11,000 years, based on Ancient DNA testing of gourd shards. Many cultures used them as sacred vessels, storage containers, musical instruments, utensils, and ornaments. Their use for many purposes provides a wealth of opportunity for artistic expression. The plant family – Cucurbitacea contains three major groups: Lagenaria – Hard-shell gourds Cucurbita –Edible and Ornamental gourds and squashes, and Luffa – Vegetable sponges. Lagenaria or hard-shell gourds are the gourds that I craft and sell. These gourds have a long growing season and take 3-6 months to dry. In the drying process, molds feed on the escaping moisture, creating the beautiful mottled effect on the gourd surface. These gourds are handled much like wood and they are a wonderful canvas for many techniques and most media. I use wood-burning and carving for shading, images, and texture. I use acrylic paints, pigment inks, dyes, and waxes for coloring. Dried seeds, pods, leaves, driftwood, antlers, beads, charms, coins, and many other decorative items can be used to rim or to embellish the gourd and to expand on the story told by the gourd. Come by and see them go from blah to LaDeDa! Gallery Previous Artist Next Artist
