Samuel asked Taylor to go on their first date at the pottery studio on campus. Samuel had been throwing pottery since high school at Lakeland Union High and continued classes in college. Taylor, on the other hand, had no pottery experience. The pottery lesson was a great choice for a first date, because we have been inseparable since. We eventually found ourselves living back in the North Wood’s after college: working and living the outdoorsy, lake loving life. We would constantly talk about how someday we would have a space to have a pottery studio. In 2021 we bought a lake lot covered with lots of ferns and tall red pines with a peninsula jutting out into the peaceful, quiet lake. We had a vision of what “Peters Point” would be. Freedom to be creative, a soon-to-be pottery studio. We were hit with heartbreak when suddenly found out that Samuel needed a kidney transplant due to a genetic syndrome. We pushed through finishing our home (building it all ourselves), all while Samuel was put on the transplant list and started doing dialysis from home every night. We did finish our house, in only 9 months, and we got that pottery wheel not long after. Doing pottery began to be a passion project that took our minds off of everything that was happening. Samuel received his transplant in 2024 and pottery continued to be a hobby that brought life into our lives through a dark time. The pottery that we make together is a labor of love, with both of our touches on each and every piece. Samuel is the throwing professional, while Taylor glazes every piece. Our glazing and design style is inspired by the beautiful place we live. All of our pottery is wheel thrown with the focus being functional pieces for every day use. From mugs, pitchers, oil pourers, bowls, cups, and our famous jewelry dishes - we like to have a diverse selection! We also create a variety of raku pottery to be used as eye catching decor pieces. Raku is a special type of kiln firing process that is unpredictable but creates a myriad of colors splayed across the glaze. During the North Wood’s Art Tour, we will be hosting at our location in Lake Tomahawk on the corner of D and HWY 47. Walk through our studio setup there to see our finished pottery selection, as well as watching throwing and glazing demonstrations. See you there! Much love, Samuel & Taylor Peters Gallery Previous Artist Next Artist

While I was putting off finding a ‘real’ job, my mother requested a gourd birdhouse for her garden. Unable to find a birdhouse gourd locally, I went to the internet. Found a gourd grower and had to buy a box of ten. Then I had to figure out what to do with the other nine. The American Gourd Society (AGS) website with links to gourd artist sites across the country gave me a long list of possibilities and I was hooked. As I explored the many shapes, sizes and history of gourds, I learned that they were the first cultivars by indigenous peoples around the planet I started to research the individual uses. GOURDS have been cultivated for at least 11,000 years, based on Ancient DNA testing of gourd shards. Many cultures used them as sacred vessels, storage containers, musical instruments, utensils, and ornaments. Their use for many purposes provides a wealth of opportunity for artistic expression. The plant family – Cucurbitacea contains three major groups: Lagenaria – Hard-shell gourds Cucurbita –Edible and Ornamental gourds and squashes, and Luffa – Vegetable sponges. Lagenaria or hard-shell gourds are the gourds that I craft and sell. These gourds have a long growing season and take 3-6 months to dry. In the drying process, molds feed on the escaping moisture, creating the beautiful mottled effect on the gourd surface. These gourds are handled much like wood and they are a wonderful canvas for many techniques and most media. I use wood-burning and carving for shading, images, and texture. I use acrylic paints, pigment inks, dyes, and waxes for coloring. Dried seeds, pods, leaves, driftwood, antlers, beads, charms, coins, and many other decorative items can be used to rim or to embellish the gourd and to expand on the story told by the gourd. Come by and see them go from blah to LaDeDa! Gallery Previous Artist Next Artist

It’s also the 25th anniversary of the North Woods Art Tour. So let’s celebrate! During the tour visitors can view the largest selection of pottery that I have all year. There will be demos, giveaways & a chance to literally leave your mark on clay as we commemorate this milestone year. I describe my pottery as fine art with an everyday purpose — a marriage of function and expression with a nod to the natural world. I enjoy hearing that my pieces have a special spot in someone’s home, and are also used at their table. When I learned to throw pots, I instinctively began covering them with images and patterns. Drawing on three-dimensional forms has fascinated me for more than 30 years. My influences evolved after I moved “up north” and ended up in my “little blue house in the woods”. For the past 22 years the plants, animals and landscapes that surround me are an unending source of inspiration. I start with stoneware clay at the potter’s wheel or I hand build my pieces with clay slabs. Then I use a variety of illustration techniques including carving, stamping, and sgraffito to decorate my pieces. I strive to make my marks loose and spontaneous — as if they grew from the piece itself. This year I am also playing around with layering glazes on simple smooth surfaces. This can create dramatic effects that often remind me of landscapes. I will also be showing 2-d artwork this year. Mono prints are created by applying layers of acrylic paint on a Gelli plate and “pulling a one-of-a-kind print on paper. Each mono print is matted in standard sizes ready for framing. I will also have blank 5x7 cards with reproductions of the mono prints available for purchase. Pigeon Road Pottery is a full-time pottery studio nestled in the woods 3 miles south of downtown Lake Tomahawk. Visitors are welcome year round by appointment only. My day-to-day studio time varies due to family responsibilities. Please call, text, or email ahead of time to avoid disappointment. I will do my best to accommodate you. Most likely longer, and sometimes we take a day off. Text to check times. Our gallery is open to showcase the crazy works of five artists as of 2023. When you see our art, you’ll understand that our work compliments each other–a bit of whimsy–sometimes more practical. Always colorful. It is a real joy to be at a place in my life where my creativity can be a central focus. I am thankful to live in a place surrounded with the quiet beauty that helps to inspire me. On the tour, we invite you to wander through our gardens and see the sculptures that we have made. We also have a labyrinth and an island garden with a pond and river. Our focus is Garden Art… and functional stoneware inspired by the world and colors of our surroundings that grace our property. Some wheel-thrown pieces … some using the slab technique with hand-made stamps, small molds, and imagination. Jeff adds his love of wood and carving skills to many of the pieces which make their collaboration complete. Commission work is not typical for us but in 2023 the rule was broken and making house number sculptures became fun. Each one stands 4-5 feet tall. Gallery Artists It’s not just me in the studio. When I make a sculpture that needs a base, Jeff Waite jumps in with his chainsaw, sander, and keen eye for the grains of wood to make my pieces have an added element. It’s fun working together! Tim Bammel – Berkley, MI We have a few of Tim’s crazy sculptures in the gallery. His work is created from found objects and inspired by his imagination. Tim just happens to be married to our daughter, Gwen. Jillanne Consie – Lac du Flambeau, WI Flowers and Birdhouses – Gnomes and Fairy Neighborhoods are a delight in any garden. Each piece is uniquely created by hand. Look for the wash on the line, a cat… lots of cats, a swing, and more. Terry Gunderson Shulta – Wausau, WI Journals are what Terry does. They are unique, original and each one if different. Terry also teaches workshops. Ask for details. Mary Robinson – Wausau, WI Mary creates art from “things found” and her collection of vegetable prints from original pastel paintings are surprising. You’ll think they are photos. Lake Michigan was just off the back yard, and rockhounding destinations such as Lake Superior and South Dakota were within driving distance. Inheriting my father’s tools and passion, I learned how to cut, shape, sand and polish amethyst, agate, jade, malachite, jasper and more into unique shapes that bring out their natural beauty. Some become unique jewelry products such as wire wrapped pendants and sterling silver cuff links; others such as thunderegg halves and agate slabs make for beautiful home decor; and I have lots of finished stone you can incorporate into your next artistic project. Lapidary and jewelry products are what I produce, but they are byproducts of why I do the work. Every stone is an experiment, an opportunity to learn a little bit about geology or technique. Plus, I think about my dad every day that I'm in the workshop. I'm overjoyed with the product, humbled by how much I have yet to learn, and honored to be my father's son. The wire I use is sterling silver, 14K gold-filled, and copper wire. Each creation is a journey. I invite you to join me in the journey by requesting a custom piece with the materials and colors you choose. I enjoy co-creating jewelry with clients. Each piece is made with love and attention and comes with a detailed description tag. You will notice that most of my jewelry pieces contain a spiral of some sort. I have always been attracted to spirals, and have been doodling them as long as I can remember. Its meaning is about creation, evolution, journey, and enlightenment. Spirals are found in the plant kingdom, throughout nature, and in the symbolism of every indigenous culture on Earth. I was in nursing school and needed a small project to rest my brain from studying. Enter beading. Living in North Dakota at the time, beads were a rare resource, so I repurposed found items and practiced a LOT! I was hooked and grew my craft but felt that I wanted more, so I taught myself new techniques with smaller beads using peyote stitch and loom beading. I was beading very happily for about 5 years when I saw a short program on glass fusing and was very intrigued. I did a lot of research and was able to purchase my first kiln and it fit in my microwave. Not having a lot of resources to lean on while I was starting this craft it was a lot of trial and error. To be honest, more error than anything else. Learning quickly from my mistakes I quickly outgrew my microwave kiln and purchased my first large kiln and started making larger projects, however jewelry is still my passion. I currently have 2 kilns for my fused glass projects and strive to learn new techniques every chance I get. If time permits, I will have an interactive bracelet making demonstration, or schedule an appointment around the tour dates to make these bracelets with a small group of friends. Also follow my Facebook page for updates on new designs and dates of my other events for the summer and fall. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to make an appointment.
