The spirit of cooperation between the artists has allowed the gallery to grow and thrive over the last 15 years. Artistree's stunning gallery space is set in a beautiful log building in Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin, near the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our cooperative represents northern artists working in a variety of media including: watercolors, oils and acrylics; fiber and paper arts; printmaking and illustration; jewelry; pottery; wood turning, carving and furniture making; photography; stained glass and other mixed media. Working on four looms in her Winchester studio, Sheri Smith draws on more than 40 years of experience in a variety of weaving techniques to create her scarves, wraps, jackets and ponchos. Her pieces feature rich texture and color, from warm earth tones to vivid brights. Sheri uses many fibers, including wool, silk, rayon, and metallics, often spinning yarns together to create exciting new combinations. Samuel invited Taylor on their first date - a pottery lesson at the campus studio. Samuel had been throwing pottery since high school at Lakeland Union and continued in college. Taylor, on the other hand, had never touched clay. The pottery studio turned out to be the perfect place to start as we’ve been inseparable ever since. After graduation, we found ourselves back in the Northwoods — working, adventuring, and living the lake-loving, outdoorsy life. We constantly talked about how one day, we’d have a pottery studio of our own. In 2021, we bought a peaceful lake lot, covered in ferns and tall red pines, with a quiet peninsula stretching into the water. We called it Peters Point and imagined it as a place for freedom, creativity, and clay. But life took an unexpected turn. Samuel was diagnosed with a genetic condition and suddenly needed a kidney transplant. While he began nightly dialysis and waited on the transplant list, we focused on finishing our home which we built ourselves, start to finish. We completed our house in just nine months, and brought home our first pottery wheel not long after. Pottery quickly became more than a hobby. It became a way to heal, to connect, and to find joy in a hard season. Samuel received his transplant in 2024, and we’ve been pouring love into clay ever since. Every piece we make is a collaboration. Samuel is the throwing expert, and Taylor glazes each piece by hand. Our style is inspired by the beautiful place we live: the woods, the water, the earth. We focus on wheel-thrown, functional pottery made to be used and loved — mugs, bowls, pitchers, oil pourers, cups, and our popular jewelry dishes. We also create a small collection of raku pottery, a unique firing technique that produces stunning, one-of-a-kind finishes perfect for decorative display. Thanks for being part of our journey. I enjoy hearing that my pieces have a special spot in someone’s home, and are also used at their table. When I learned to throw pots, I instinctively began covering them with images and patterns. Drawing on three-dimensional forms has fascinated me for more than 30 years. My influences evolved after I moved “up north” to my “little blue house in the woods”. I’ve been here over 20 years now. The plants, animals and landscapes that surround me are an unending source of inspiration. I start with stoneware clay at the potter’s wheel or I hand build my pieces with clay slabs. Then I use a variety of illustration techniques including carving, stamping, and sgraffito to decorate my pieces. I strive to make my marks loose and spontaneous — as if they grew from the piece itself. I also play around with layering glazes on simple smooth surfaces. This creates dramatic effects that often remind me of landscapes. I’ve updated my studio name to Pigeon Road Pottery & Design. Pottery will continue to be a primary focus of the studio, but I have expanded my offerings to include printmaking, collage and assemblage fine art pieces inspired by my surroundings. In 2024 I returned to making 2-d art. It began while I recuperated from an accident that kept me away from clay. I continue developing this new work as part of my business and artistic journey. Observers will note the link to the imagery and themes I have long used in my ceramics. Mono prints are created by applying layers of acrylic paint on a Gelli plate and “pulling” prints on paper. Carving linoleum blocks is a natural extension of my sgraffito clay work. Once a block is carved it is inked and pressed on to paper. I also create collages and assemblage pieces from my mono prints, block prints, vintage papers, found objects and ceramic pieces I create in my studio.
